  What is EDI?    
  EDI is the process of sending documents, such as invoices, directly from one computer to another.  It is used instead of printing out invoices, only for them to be typed back up again into another computer system.  It saves retailers sorting through volumes of paper and results in fewer errors and greater success of invoices being paid on time.

Traditionally, EDI software needs linking into an accounts system, making it difficult to set up and troublesome to use.  Invoices are often rejected due to errors which means they go unpaid whilst the invoices are corrected and resent.  Integrated EDI systems are often so large and complicated that it requires a dedicated EDI manager.  With EDI software, every company has to have their own mailbox.  This is often the most expensive part of an EDI software package and is normally charged annually, up-front.
